Black Seed – “The Remedy For Everything But Death”

Source: http://www.getholistichealth.com/40511/black-seed-the-remedy-for-everything-but-death/

This humble, but immensely powerful seed, kills MRSA, heals the chemical weapon poisoned body, stimulates regeneration of the dying beta cells within the diabetic’s pancreas, and yet too few even know it exists.

The seeds of the annual flowering plant, Nigella Sativa, have been prized for their healing properties since time immemorial.  While frequently referred to among English-speaking cultures as Roman coriander, black sesame, black cumin, black caraway and onion seed, it is known today primarily as black seed, which is at the very least an accurate description of its physical appearance.

The earliest record of its cultivation and use come from ancient Egypt. Black seed oil, in fact, was found in Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb, dating back to approximately 3,300 years ago.[i]  In Arabic cultures, black cumin is known as Habbatul barakah, meaning the “seed of blessing.” It is also believed that the Islamic prophet Mohammed said of it that it is “a remedy for all diseases except death.”

Many of black cumin’s traditionally ascribed health benefits have been thoroughly confirmed in the biomedical literature. In fact, since 1964, there have been 458 published, peer-reviewed studies referencing it.

We have indexed salient research, available to view on GreenMedInfo.com on our Black Seed (Nigella Sativa) page, on well over 40 health conditions that may be benefited from the use of the herb, including over 20 distinct pharmacological actions it expresses, such as:

  • Analgesic (Pain-Killing)
  • Anti-Bacterial
  • Anti-Inflammatory
  • Anti-Ulcer
  • Anti-Cholinergic
  • Anti-Fungal
  • Ant-Hypertensive
  • Antioxidant
  • Antispasmodic
  • Antiviral
  • Bronchodilator
  • Gluconeogenesis Inhibitor (Anti-Diabetic)
  • Hepatoprotective (Liver Protecting)
  • Hypotensive
  • Insulin Sensitizing
  • Interferon Inducer
  • Leukotriene Antagonist
  • Renoprotective (Kidney Protecting)
  • Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibitor

These 22 pharmacological actions are only a subset of a far wider number of beneficial properties intrinsic to the black seed. While it is remarkable that this seed has the ability to positively modulate so many different biological pathways, this is actually a rather common occurrence among traditional plant medicines.

Our project has identified over 1600 natural compounds with a wide range of health benefits, and we are only in our first 5 years of casual indexing. There are tens of thousands of other substances that have already been researched, with hundreds of thousands of studies supporting their medicinal value (MEDLINE, whence our study abstracts come, has over 600,000 studies classified as related to Complementary and Alternative Medicine).

Take turmeric, for example. We have identified research indicating its value in over 600 health conditions, while also expressing over 160 different potentially beneficial pharmacological actions. You can view the quick summary of over 1500 studies we have summarized on our Turmeric Research page, which includes an explorative video on turmeric. Professional database members are further empowered to manipulate the results according to their search criteria, i.e. pull up and print to PDF the 61 studies on turmeric and breast cancer.  This, of course, should help folks realize how voluminous the supportive literature indicating the medicinal value of natural substances, such as turmeric and black seed, really is.

Black seed has been researched for very specific health conditions. Some of the most compelling applications include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in human subjects.[ii]
  • Helicobacter Pylori Infection: Black seeds possess clinically useful anti-H. pylori activity, comparable to triple eradication therapy.[iii]
  • Epilepsy: Black seeds were traditionally known to have anticonvulsive properties. A 2007 study with epileptic children, whose condition was refractory to conventional drug treatment, found that a water extract significantly reduced seizure activity.[iv]
  • High Blood pressure: The daily use of 100 and 200 mg of black seed extract, twice daily, for 2 months, was found to have a blood pressure-lowering effect in patients with mild hypertension.[v]
  • Asthma: Thymoquinone, one of the main active constituents within Nigella sativa (black cumin), is superior to the drug fluticasone in an animal model of asthma.[vi] Another study, this time in human subjects, found that boiled water extracts of black seed have relatively potent antiasthmatic effect on asthmatic airways.[vii]
  • Acute tonsillopharyngitis: characterized by tonsil or pharyngeal inflammation (i.e. sore throat), mostly viral in origin, black seed capsules (in combination with Phyllanthus niruri) have been found to significantly alleviate throat pain, and reduce the need for pain-killers, in human subjects.[viii]
  • Chemical Weapons Injury: A randomized, placebo-controlled human study of chemical weapons injured patients found that boiled water extracts of black seed reduced respiratory symptoms, chest wheezing, and pulmonary function test values, as well as reduced the need for drug treatment.[ix]
  • Colon Cancer: Cell studies have found that black seed extract compares favorably to the chemoagent 5-fluoruracil in the suppression of colon cancer growth, but with a far higher safety profile.[x] Animal research has found that black seed oil has significant inhibitory effects against colon cancer in rats, without observable side effects.[xi]
  • MRSA: Black seed has anti-bacterial activity against clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus.[xii]
  • Opiate Addiction/Withdrawal: A study on 35 opiate addicts found black seed as an effective therapy in long-term treatment of opioid dependence.[xiii]

Sometimes the biblical reference to ‘faith the size of a mustard seed moving mountains’ comes to mind in connection with natural substances like black seeds. After all, do seeds not contain within them the very hope for continuance of the entire species that bore it?  This super-saturated state of the seed, where life condenses itself down into an intensely miniaturized holographic fragment of itself, promising the formation of future worlds within itself, is the very emblem of life’s immense and immortal power.

If we understand the true nature of the seed, how much life (past, present and future) is contained within it, it will not seem so far-fetched that it is capable of conquering antibiotic resistant bacteria, healing the body from chemical weapons poisoning, or stimulate the regeneration of dying insulin-producing beta cells in the diabetic, to name but only a fraction of black seed’s experimentally-confirmed powers.

Moving the mountain of inertia and falsity associated with the conventional concept of disease, is a task well-suited for seeds and not chemicals. The greatest difference, of course, between a seed and a patented synthetic chemical (i.e. pharmaceutical drug), is that Nature (God) made the former, and men with profit-motives and a deranged understanding of the nature of the body made the latter.

The time, no doubt, has come for food, seeds, herbs, plants, sunlight, air, clean water, and yes, love, to assume once again their central place in medicine, which is to say, the art and science of facilitating self-healing within the human body. Failing this, the conventional medical system will crumble under the growing weight of its own corruption, ineptitude, and iatrogenic suffering (and subsequent financial liability) it causes. To the degree that it reforms itself, utilizing non-patented and non-patentable natural compounds with actual healing properties, a brighter future awaits on the horizon. To the degree that it fails, folks will learn to take back control over their health themselves, which is why black seed, and otherfood-medicines, hold the key to self-empowerment.

OVERTHROWING A MARS COLONY DICTATOR: BRITISH ELITE PREPARE FOR THE REAL THING

Source: http://exopolitics.org/overthrowing-a-mars-colony-dictator-british-elite-prepare-for-the-real-thing/
WRITTEN BY DR MICHAEL SALLA ON JUNE 25, 2015. POSTED IN FEATURED
Mars Colony Dictatorship

On June 11, the British Interplanetary Society began a two day meeting on a most unusual topic according to aBBC news article: “How to Overthrow a Martian Dictatorship.” The meeting envisaged a Mars colony ruled over by a ruthless dictator who trampled on the rights of workers in a futurist society controlled by a corporation. The dictator needed to be overthrown without destroying the colony itself. According to the author of the BBC article, Richard Hollingham, the meeting brought together 30 prominent scientists, engineers and philosophers who took their “task seriously,” only, wink wink, “two short blocks from the London headquarters of Britain’s security service, MI6.” .

At the same time as the June 11/12 meeting was held, real life events were allegedly occurring at a secret Mars colony that remarkably paralleled what the British Interplanetary Society was discussing. Was it just coincidence, or are British scientists and policy makers, with more than just physical proximity to Britain’s MI6, secretly preparing for future efforts to remove from power ruthless dictators controlling secret corporate colonies on Mars?

Hollingham gave a brief background to the British Interplanetary Society meeting that was officially titled the “Extraterrestrial Liberty III – Dissent, Revolution and Liberty in Space”:

This is the third annual conference on extraterrestrial liberty. Last year the event tackled the challenge of writing a constitution for an alien settlement, concluding that successful space colonies should base laws and liberties on the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.

According to the meeting’s organizer, Charles Cockell, a professor of astrobiology at the University of Edinburgh: “This year we’re discussing what happens if you don’t like the government you’ve created and want to overthrow it.”

The scenario described by Cockell was the following:

The scenarios the group is contemplating are easiest to imagine if you think about what a space colony might be like. Perhaps a domed settlement with a few hundred residents, beneath a thin dusty Martian sky. A fragile and isolated outpost of humanity 225 million kilometres from the home world. With a brutal dictator and his cronies in charge of the oxygen generators, for instance.

The most likely dictator would be one emerging from a corporation controlling a Mars colony that exploits workers as a form of slave labor according to Cockell:

As we know private corporations can be just as ruthless and despotic as the worst governments.  If you strike, then maybe the corporation says ‘that’s fine – let me show you to the airlock and you can leave’ and off you go into the vacuum of space.”

More than coincidentally, only two days before the BBC published  Hollingham’s June 22 report of the British Interplanetary Society meeting, a whistleblower claims that he was part of an inspection team to investigate the very scenario the meeting had discussed.

According to Corey Goode, who claims to have served with a secret space program for 20 years from 1987 to 2007, he was part of an inspection team sent to investigate accusations of slave labor at a mining facility on Mars owned by an Interplanetary Corporate Conglomerate. Goode provided a detailed report on June 22 (“coincidentally” the same day as Hollingham’s article appeared) that described how he and a Lt Col Gonzales (pseudonym) led the inspection tour that was accompanied by its own armed security team. Apparently, the inspection tour had been offered by the Interplanetary Corporate Conglomerate to a “Secret Space Program Alliance” (that Goode and Gonzales are affiliated with) to counter accusations of slave labor at the corporation’s covert Mars and space facilities.

What Good and Gonzales encountered at the secret Mars colony on June 20, was more than enough evidence that the accusations were well founded. According to a prior agreement, described in Goode’s report, a family of workers from the colony would be allowed to leave the Mars colony with the inspection team in order to be debriefed, and allowed to resettle back on Earth or be given sanctuary elsewhere. When a family member was covertly withheld by the base commander to pressure the rest of the family into silence, Gonzales left the departing spacecraft to confront the commander about what he had done. The base commander imprisoned Gonzales and his security team, and then sent base security personnel to arrest Goode who describes what happened after he was taken off the inspection team’s spacecraft:

The facility security team walked us in, straight past the base commander that was in a very heated conversation with the ICC representative. Something had gone very wrong and his ego was bruised or his authority was challenged in front of his men. He was extremely upset and was no longer listening to the ICC representative who outranked him.

We were walked to a wall that suddenly had a double door where there was none before. They opened it and we were then walked into a detention facility that was conspicuously absent on the previous tour. As we walked back through the rows of cells we saw quite a lot of people in various psychological stages of psychological distress locked up. When we reached the back cell where Gonzales and the two other security personnel were detained I was relieved to see them alive. We were all locked up and left without a word spoken to us in the same cell.

Gonzales said that the base commander was a tyrant and a total megalomaniac who was not used to people challenging him diplomatically or otherwise on his base.

The events described by Goode are amazingly similar to the scenario discussed at the June 11/12 British Interplanetary Society event that are summarized in Hollingham’s June 22 article.  Here we have a corporate base commander who was a “tyrant and a total megalomaniac,” who would not allow anyone to challenge his authority, including more senior corporate officials.

Goode has been claiming that we are soon to witness a massive document dump that will reveal the truth about secret space programs, and criminal abuses that have occurred within some of them. “Coincidentally,” Wikileaks has again begun releasing massive document dumps that made it a media sensation back in 2000.  In May, after a five year hiatus, Wikileaks restored its electronic drop box for whistleblowers to again anonymously share data.  All is in place for an organization like Wikileaks to share the document dumps that Goode claims will reveal all.

Soon after the document dumps occur, according to Goode, there will be war crimes trials organized by the Secret Space Program Alliance. Recent hacking of U.S. Federal government personnel and corporate contractor personnel files is allegedly part of this covert preparation process.

The similarities in the scenarios discussed at the June 11/12 British Interplanetary Society meeting, and the June 22 reports by Goode and Hollingham, lead to an astounding conclusion. British scientists, engineers, philosophers and policy makers, with the tacit support of MI6 officials, are secretly preparing the British elite for future disclosures about secret colonies on Mars and elsewhere that have been run as corporate dictatorships by megalomaniac tyrants that have been abusing workers for years. How to remove these Mars Colony dictators without them killing off their personnel and/or destroying their valuable facilities is a problem all humanity will soon have to confront.

Democracy was never meant for the poor – 800 years of tears since June 15, 1215

On FB I met in a chat-discussion:

‪#‎RT‬ ‪#‎MagnaCarta800‬ It’s the BIG one, this is the day We the people reinstate our Rights, We take back our Power… Join us! There is nothing more precious than Liberty… whatever you have to do to be here today, please do!
MAGNA CARTA DAY Monday 15th June 2015 ‪#‎EmpowermentMondays‬‪#‎BeliefsChangeMatter‬

As I am not living in a Common Wealth country, I wanted to know exactly for which people the Magna Carta was meant, and therefore I shared two previous blogs to this, but I went on and googled: Magna Carta 800 years of tears, met these articles: http://arewamagazine.blogspot.nl/2015/01/democracy-was-never-meant-for-poor-by.html

Democracy is often defined as ‘the government of the people, to the people, and by the people’ among the major characteristics of democracy include; timely election, right to vote and be voted, campaigns, and parliament.  looking critically at democracy in Nigeria, the developing world, and indeed the whole world, one will tend to understand that ‘ democracy was not meant for the poor’.

This  is because, from setting up of political parties, primary elections, campaigns, up to general election, it is all about money, power and what both can do.  from the registration of political parties,  buying of expression of interest forms, campaign and travels, democracy did not make any arrangement for the poor except voting which he has no another option. just recently, the APC presidential candidate complain about high price of forms at the cost of 27.5 million naira, that is to high, not for the poor, with the poor and not by the poor.
According to media reports, the sum of 21 billion naira was “donated’ to president Jonathan during the lunch of his campaign funds, that is nearly one third of the budget  of some states of the federation, those that look like that was meant for everybody. I wonder whether Nigeria’s democracy was meant for the cabals. Why on earth will a rich country like Nigeria ever have  poverty of to about 50 percent of the population?
Whether monarchy, socialism, military dictatorship, democracy, or another system of government, what is most important is that, the government should be able to protect the lives and properties of people, their welfare and their overall interest. If the government cannot do that, then anarchism may triumph over the interest of the nation.
therefore, 2015    must  be a different year for Nigeria. a year of hope, reflection, peace and centenary year for rekindling a better Nigeria.

Dennis Kucinich on Welfare & Poverty

Democratic Representative (OH-10)

Address poverty with full employment economy & social reformQ: We live in a country today where Latino and Black household wealth–not income, but accumulated household wealth–is about 10% for the average black and brown family of what it is for the average white family. How did we get here and how do we get out of it?

A: In Cleveland we face a situation where there is a massive amount of foreclosures, rising unemployment about around particularly around African American households and some Latinos. Here is my plan first of all. A full employment economy. A Roosevelt type WPA program that puts everyone who is able to work back to work with a living wage. Second a not for profit health care system. Third, universal pre-kindergarten. Four, universal college education. So we need to make economic reform the fundamental driving force in this country and a president percentage stands for the principle of a rising tide lifts all boats not trickle down economics.

Funding faith-based initiatives with taxes is problematicIn 2003, Kucinich said he believes that funding faith-based initiatives with tax dollars can be problematic and that the strings attached to federal funds awarded to religious groups could encroach on the freedom of religion. Instead, he said, he sees peace, health care, education and other matters of social welfare as “faith-based initiatives.” Rather than giving money to religious groups, “the work of government ought to be advancing spiritual principles in our everyday life,” he said.

Separate state from church, not from spiritual valuesQ: Do you believe that, through the power of prayer, disasters like Hurricane Katrina could have been prevented?

A: I come from a spiritual insight which says that we have to have faith but also have good works. The founders meant to have separation of church & state, but they never meant America to be separate from spiritual values. I’ll bring strong spiritual values to the White House, and I’ll bring values that value peace, social & economic justice, values that remember where I came from.

Public sector has moral responsibility to provide jobsWhere the private sector fails to provide jobs, the public sector has a moral responsibility to do so. There ought to be work for those who are able to work and who want to work. Our industrial base is understood to be vital to our national economic welfare. America needs a great new public works program to restore the dream of a full employment economy.

Education is only solution to alleviate povertyCongress should strive to reduce poverty as its goal. Education is the only solution proven to reduce poverty levels. Encourage people to get career training or work toward a college degree, GED, other degree or learn English. A college degree translates to a living wage job that allows people to live self-sufficiently and move from welfare programs for good.

Next Monday is the 800th birthday of a document called Magna Carta. Some people say it’s one of the most important legal documents ever written. And while it’s pretty old now you can still find traces of it in modern laws around the world.
Here’s Sarah to explain how it all came to be.

Magna Carta manuscript reveals its secrets: Scans uncover lost text hidden on a damaged section of 800-year-old parchment

  • Burnt Magna Carta text has been made visible for the first time in 250 years
  • Experts used multispectral imaging work to reveal the illegible words
  • Manuscript was said to have been damaged in a fire in London in 1731
  • It’s one of four that have survived since 1215 when the charter was created
  • The four documents will come together for the first time next year

Multispectral imaging (pictured left) – a non-destructive imaging technique – of the burnt copy has been conducted and has revealed text that has not been visible for 250 years. An image of the historical manuscript can be seen, right, under cyan lighting conditions

THE COTTON LIBRARY FIRE OF 1731

The scanned copy of the Magna Carta was damaged in the Cotton Library fire in 1731.

The contents of the Cotton Library was assembled by Robert Cotton and presented to the British nation by his grandson in 1700.

It contains some of the most well-known treasures of the British Library, including the Lindisfarne Gospels, Magna Carta and Beowulf.

On October 23, 1731, a fire broke out where the manuscripts were being temporarily held, at Ashburnham House, Westminster.

A quarter of the collection was affected and the librarian is said to have leapt from a window to escape the blaze, rescuing an early manuscript of the Bible at the same time.

A total of 13 manuscripts were completely destroyed and many only survived as charred fragments, or with significant damage.

Lots of the parchments were coated in gelatine, which is the end product of sudden degradation of the parchment collagen. When cooled, it becomes brittle and obscures text. Water used to extinguish the fire, also played a role in damaging the literary treasures.

The content of the hidden text isn’t new, because the four manuscripts have the same content, but the discovery is important nonetheless.

To clarify the contents of the damaged parchment, a team of experts first examined the original frames to determine their structure and composition.

All original mounting materials in contact with the charters were tested using different methods, such as infrared spectroscopy and pH tests, to determine their stability and compatibility with the new materials.

Once the charters were removed from the frames, near-infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution digital microscopy was used to investigate the condition of the ink and parchment to assess the overall condition of the historical document.

‘With the frames and glass removed, there was a rare opportunity to employ the cutting-edge technique of multispectral imaging enabling us to virtually peel away the layers of damage currently affecting the manuscript,’ Dr Duffy wrote.

Multispectral imaging is a non-destructive, non-invasive imaging technique using different colour lights, including ultra-violet and infrared, to recover faded and lost text.

WHY THE MAGNA CARTA WAS SO GROUND-BREAKING

  • Magna Carta means The Great Charter in Latin and was originally issued in 1215.
  • It was the first document forced onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges.
  • The charter required King John of England to proclaim certain liberties and accept that his will was not arbitrary.
  • It was an important part of the process that led to the rule of constitutional law in the English speaking world.
  • In practice Magna Carta in the medieval period did not generally limit the power of kings.
  • But by the time of the English Civil War it had become an important symbol for those who wished to show that the King was bound by the law.
  • It influenced the early settlers in New England and inspired later constitutional documents, including the United States Constitution.

A high-resolution camera was securely mounted directly over the charter, which was then illuminated with LED lights ranging from the ultraviolet at wavelengths invisible to humans, to the visible.

The chemical composition of the material in the charter was varied and included ink and parchment which reacts differently to the lights. This means that experts could see extra information – including text – which is undetectable by the human eye.

This technique will allow scientists to preserve the Magna Carta for the next 800 years.

In February 2015, the four manuscripts will be brought together for the first time in history for a three-day event, which will allow further academic study of them side by side.

The date is 800 years after the issue of the Charter by King John in 1215.

A total of 1,215 members of the public will also be able to see them.

People interested in the historic opportunity can enter a ballot to be in with a chance of taking part in the event, sponsored by law firm Linklaters.

The British Library is home to two of the original Magna Carta manuscripts, while the other two are held at Lincoln and Salisbury Cathedrals.

Claire Breay, Lead Curator of Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts at the British Library, says: ‘Magna Carta is the most popular item in the Library’s Treasures gallery, and is venerated around the world as marking the starting point for government under the law.

‘Bringing the four surviving manuscripts together for the first time will create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for researchers and members of the public to see them in one place.’

800 years of Magna Carta and the Myth of English exceptionalism

Crying Tears of Liberty

Le sacré, voilà l’ennemi

800 years of Magna Carta and the Myth of English exceptionalism

OKAY

So.

1- Magna Carta is not the first sign of Constitutionalism (by the way, Britain does not have a written constitution), it is not the beginning of any form of representative government and it does not relate in any way – ANY way – to modern conceptions of liberty.

2- In fact, the Magna Carta was a medieval document which intended the firm establishment of a medieval hierarchical society – which was natural of middle ages. The people Magna Carta grants certain “freedoms” is mostly the Barons, that is, the feudal order of nobility. Therefore, in the Magna Carta the freedom of some (The Barons) is much more important and extense than the freedom of the others (The peasantry and serfs, for instance). Among other things, the Magna Carta concerned itself with protection of church rights, limitations on taxation and other feudal payments owed to the Crown. So the Magna Carta’s point was mainly to strenghten the role and garantee the power of two very specific orders – the barons and the church.

3- The Magna Carta limits the power of the King in favour of the barons. This was not news in Medieval Society and Political Thought. One only has to read Medieval philosophy to know that Kings were not supposed to rule alone. In fact, and for instance, parliament and other forms of advisory government were called to give advice several times during the Middle Ages not just in Britain, but in France, Castille, Portugal etc.  (for instance, from 1230 the Cortes of Castille and Leon were merged and the lords had quite some power given that they commanded the army). It is also worth noting that movements towards streghtening the nobility were not exactly news in Europe. Other realms have documents that in intent are very similar to the Magna Carta.

4- What we call the advent of Modernity (late 16-18th century) is in fact marked by the power of the King. From the 16th century onwards it begins in Europe a process of growing centralization of state based around the figure of the king and supported by court functionaries and bureaucrats. Traditional Nobility slowly begins to lose its importance in favour of educated fuctionaries of state. Although war would always be the function of nobles, government is slowly occupied by what is called in some countries the “Nobles of the robe” – that is, nobles whose main function was to take part in the government, helping and advising the King. This was also when Kings established themselves in capital cities and stopped traveling around the country. However, this process of centralization is made against the kind of Order that the Magna Carta imposed, mainly because the Magna Carta conferred great power to a certain order – the Barons – while modernity brings the State whose head is a Monarch – a Princeps – into play. State-Prince lead the Realm and they are above factions. The King is no longer a Primus inter pares – the first among equals. He is above them, he is the state. This movement is extremely important because the notion of state connected to a central power, a central entity that is above orders finds its roots here. So we could say, in this sense, that the Magna Carta is not a Modern document. Not Modern by our 21th century standards, and not even Modern by 16 or 17 or 18th century standards. In fact, this process of centralization is made against documents like the MC.

5- What happens in England and Scotland is slightly different because of Parliament. In the 17th century a struggle ensues between King and Parliament which is motivated by political and religious tendencies. It is in the 17th century that the lawyers and “political theorists” recover the Magna Carta and give it a new meaning: a Charter against the King’s “absolute” power. This is a very loose interpretation of the original Magna Carta and we can definitely argue that the document was manipulated by 17th century parliamentarians in order to suit their struggle against the King. It is also worth noting that the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution are not in any conceivable way connected to democratic notions, or Sovereignty of State. In my view, we can talk about a very primitive separation of powers. Separation NOT balance of powers (which by the way, was what Montesquieu wanted).

6- In the 18th and 19th century with the rise of Whig historians and Whig ideology the Magna Carta gained yet another role. It became a symbol for British exceptionalism. The idea that the British system of Goverment had no need of violent revolutions because the system garanteed itself, garanteed the liberty of its subjects and protection from abuses of power. (This is a very small explanation, I could write thousand words on the whigs but I fear no one will read this).

7- Why is all this important? Why should we take this opportunity, the 800 years of the Magna Carta to say these things? Because British Exceptionalism is a lie. It is based on the idea that is still in vigour nowadays amongst many political scientists that there are two traditions of Modern Liberty: The British one with its “gradual process of maturing” and the Continental with its violent revolutions and its guillotine. The problem is that by comparing both, the British sounds a little better because it is not “so violent”. But the fact is that the only exceptionalism of Britain is the same as France, Spain, Prussia etc. Every political formation, every region is exceptional in its own way. Thus the idea that the British system is better than the others is a lie because the freedoms it garanteed were very limited until mid 19th century (post French revolution, and mid Industrial revolution) and because it does not take in account that with or without Parliament the British political system was as corrupt as any other Ancien Regime system in Europe. And mostly because it is precisely this thought that originates a number of anachronistic analysis of the Magna Carta, giving it meanings it never intended to have. From there is born the idea that the British system of government was “meant to be” since the 12th century which is a historical fallacy. Nothing is really meant to be in History. From there also, originates the idea of superiority: we are better because we had sparks of democracy 800 years before everyone else and 600 years before Rousseau and that damn Revolution the French did.

Ultimately, this British exceptionalism although no longer believed by serious historians, is very deeply entrenched in certain parts of British’s elites. Of course that it is not only fed by the Magna Carta or the Glorious Revolution or Edmund Burke. It is fed by a lot of other factors such as the fact that Britain was the greatest, largest empire in History. But one wonders whether it is not time to fight these myths in a time in which what one needs to underline is that Britain is part of a wider context, that there were similiar documents to the Magna Carta, similar tensions between “barons” (or feudal order) and the King in other realms of Europe, that the religions tensions in 17th century England and Scotland also have a wider European context, that as John Donne said, No man is a island entire of itself. And may I say, no island is really an island alone by itself, with no context, with no Structure to explain it.

Monday 15 June 2015 – The official ceremony: Magna Carta Foundation of Liberty

HISTORY OF THE MAGNA CARTA

800 years of liberty

Magna Carta was not the first time that a monarch had agreed in writing to safeguard the rights, privileges and liberties of the clergy and the nobles – to place limits on the power of the crown.

Henry I set a precedent on his accession to the throne in 1100, thirty-four years after the Norman Conquest. He issued a royal proclamation – the Coronation Charter, designed to atone for the past abuses of his predecessor William Rufus. The ink was barely dry in the Domesday Book from fifteen years earlier, so it was vital to ensure a consistent income stream from the nobility for the business of kingship, at least for the duration of his reign, which lasted thirty-five years.

Yet even though the Coronation Charter is acknowledged as the precursor to Magna Carta, it was conveniently forgotten and / or ignored by four Kings, and almost one Queen, over the course of the next century.

It was only after Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton, also in long term dispute with King John, dusted off the 113 year old proclamation of Henry I and showed it to the Barons, that the idea of a new and improved charter – a Great Charter took hold.

Magna Carta, despite the pennant flying theatricality of the showdown at Runnymede in June, 1215, suffered a similar, yet more rapid demise than the Coronation Charter. By August the same year, Pope Innocent III had annulled Magna Carta, declaring it illegal and having been sealed under duress. King John therefore never lived with the full consequences of the Magna Carta humiliation, and by October of 1216, he had died of dysentery at the ripe old age of 50.

By this time, great charters had achieved traction and had acquired a heritage. It had been shown that even proclamations of over a hundred years old could be used as leverage and justification in order to drag a reluctant king to the middle of a Berkshire field and force him to seal into law, articles and clauses concerning liberties, which we now call freedoms.

Once these ideas of freedom were liberated by the events of 19 June, 1215, and it had been shown that not even the king was above the Common Law of the land, then Magna Carta became an idea which could never be uninvented, or unimagined.

Besides, up to thirteen copies of Magna Carta were quickly made, (complete with spelling mistakes) and sent throughout the kingdom, often to the great cathedrals of England. Magna Carta had therefore gone viral. There were just too many important witnesses to the events of June 19th, many of whom were the bishops themselves, for Magna Carta to be ever denied or forgotten.

Over the course of the next 800 years, the idea of Magna Carta gathered momentum and assumed a greater authority in respect of the central key clauses concerning liberty and justice. These central clauses, usually referred to as 38 and 39, have not only stood the test of time, but have a potency of their own which has seen off hundreds of attempts at annulment, repeal, modification and suspension by successive monarchs and governments.

The Magna Carta has been the most valuable export of Great Britain to the rest of the world.

Runnymede is synonymous with the words ‘Magna Carta’ as this was the place on 15 June 1215 that King John agreed to have the ‘Great Charter’ sealed. This event has later become recognised as one of the most important events in English history as it marked the road to individual freedom, parliamentary democracy and to the supremacy of law. In acknowledgement of this, Runnymede Borough Council, Surrey County Council, National Trust, Royal Holloway, Brunel University and associated stakeholders are currently finalising a local events programme aimed at celebrating the 800th anniversary in Runnymede.

Monday 15 June 2015 – The official ceremony: Magna Carta Foundation of Liberty

An official ceremony to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta will take place on Runnymede Meadows on 15 June 2015. Surrey County Council and the National Trust are the main organisers for this event. Further details will be provided on this page once they are confirmed.
